Tesla is an American rock band from Sacramento, California, formed in the early 1980s. Originally named City Kidd, they changed their name to Tesla before releasing their debut album, Mechanical Resonance (1986), which produced hits like “Modern Day Cowboy” and “Little Suzi.”
They gained popularity during the 1980s hair metal era, with their second album, The Great Radio Controversy (1989), featuring the top-ten single “Love Song.” Their 1990 live acoustic album, Five Man Acoustical Jam, included their highest-charting single, “Signs.” Subsequent albums like Psychotic Supper (1991) and Bust a Nut (1994) charted well but lacked major radio hits. The band disbanded in 1996 but reunited in 2000 and has continued recording and touring. Guitarist Tommy Skeoch left in 2006, replaced by Dave Rude. Their most recent release is the 2024 EP All About Love, with their latest studio album being Shock (2019). Tesla has sold at least 14 million albums in the U.S.
